A Somali man convicted for murder and rape on Thursday was taken to police custody for deportation to Somalia after his release from the Turku prison at the end of his imprisonment tenure in Finland.

The Somali man had received a deportation order in 2001, pending his release.

The South Finland District Court decided on Thursday that the Somali man should be detained until his deportation from Finland.

He was taken to the detention centre immediately after his release from the prison, the police said.

The Somali national, Abdiqadir Osman Hussein, arrived in Finland in 1990 and has been convicted in 1993 of his first sexual offense in Finland for raping a 13-year-old girl.

His resident permit expired while he was in the prison.

Upon release from prison, the Somali man murdered a 15-year-old girl in Tampere. He was sentenced to life term imprisonment for the murder.

Later, the man was found guilty of aggravated child sexual exploitations and abuse during a prison vacation.

According to the police, the 2001 deportation order is still valid and the court did not rule on the validity of the order.

The police said deportation to Somalia is exceptional and very difficult. It also requires a great deal of advance planning.

“Cooperation with the Somali authorities is demanding. To my knowledge, there are no scheduled flights between Mogadishu and Helsinki,” said Southwestern Finland Police Chief Inspector Stephan Sundqvist.
