Mon, 25 Apr, 2016 12:11:49 AM FTimes- STT Report, Apr 25 ![]() File Photo Lehtikuva. Groceries are running out of stocks of locally grown carrots, reported a Finnish language daily, Turun Sanomat.
Only imported carrots are available for the remainder of spring.
Wholesalers said domestic carrot is now available only for industrial use.
However, the remaining supplies cannot be delivered to the stores for retail consumers.
The carrot shortage is country wide, said the Central Union of Agricultural Producers and Forest Owners (MTK).
Weather problems during the autumn harvest have been cited as the main reason for the shortage.
Night frosts which had continued for several days in autumn froze the roots so badly that some of the carrots could not be harvested.
The carrot harvest was 10 to 20 per cent lower last year.
Domestic carrot runs out of stock approximately once in 20 years.
The new stock of openly cultivated domestic carrot will go on sale after the Midsummer.
