Going back to the negotiating table is the only option in order to resolve crisis in Eastern Ukraine, Foreign Minister Erkki Tuomioja told news agency STT.

Tuomioja said the situation in Eastern Ukraine seemed to have escalated to much worse than before due to fighting.

Donetsk region has witnessed serious fighting on Saturday night and Sunday since the beginning of September when parties signed a ceasefire agreement in Minsk.

Tuomioja said the parties should continue direct talks in order to resolve the dispute.

“This has got back to the Minsk negotiation formula,” the Minister said, adding that the disputing parties have different interpretations of what has been agreed and only they themselves can find a solution through the support of international community.

The European Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) and media sources have reported Eastern Ukraine to be under control of several armed separatists.

Tuomioja did not comment on the armed groups and their origin but reminded of the obligation of the Minsk agreement.

According to Tuomioja, the Minsk agreement obliges Russia not to provide arms support.
