According to calculations, nearly 1,300 whooper swans were observed overwintering in the country last weekend.
The study on the number of whooper swans is part of an international project to determine the total population of the species in Europe. The population of whooper swans is estimated to have increased.
Most of the species overwintering in the country spend winter months in the Åland Islands. However, in the northern-most parts, the swans have been observed in Kolari and Muonio.
The whooper swans normally overwinter along the southern Baltic Sea and North Sea coast.
The international project is led by Wetlands International. In Finland, BirdLife Finland and the Finnish Museum of Natural History are responsible for the bird’s population study.
