The Squadron 2020 project’s new vessels will replace seven vessels of different classes including the aging Hämeenmaa and Rauma classes as well as the already phased out minelayer Pohjanmaa.
According to Takanen, the new vessels must be able to operate in the cramped conditions of archipelago as well as in open seas.
Emphasis has also been put on the vessels’ ability to counter submarines. Equipping the new vessels with lightweight torpedoes with a range of about 20 kilometres is being examined.
Procurement of torpedoes for the Hamina-class missile boats which may undergo upgrade in the future in is also on the cards.
The news agency STT understands that the construction work for the new type of vessels is planned for the beginning of 2019.The old vessels will be replaced by at least four new ones.
