The number of Finnish citizens moving to Spain has been growing in the recent period.

More than 11,000 Finns are currently living permanently in the southern Spain region of Costa del Sol as the number of Finns living in the Mediterranean continues to soar.

Although the majority of Finns immigrating to Spain are the elderly, the group also comprise young people, families and entrepreneurs.

About half of those involved in work are entrepreneurs, according to a study by Dr. Paula Könnilä from the Institute of Migration in Turku.

According to Könnilä, work has always been a key phenomenon for the Finns in Costa del Sol.

The study for the first time analyses young Spanish people of Finnish origin. The second and third generation migrants have adapted well to the Spanish culture, despite their strong Finnish identity.

“It is great how openly young people generally adapt. For instance, for young people it is obvious that they have Spanish friends.

“However, many still want to maintain the connections to Finland,” adds Könnilä.
