The seasonally-adjusted volume of retail trade in September fell by 1.3 percent in the eurozone and by 1.2 percent in the 28-member European Union (EU), according to estimates from Eurostat, the statistical office of the European bloc.
     
In August retail trade rose by 0.9 percent in the eurozone and 1.1 percent in the EU respectively.
     
The 1.3 percent decrease in the eurozone, compared with the data of August, is due to falls of 2.2 percent for the non-food sector and 0.1 percent for food, drinks and tobacco, while automotive fuel rose by 0.9 percent.
     
In the EU bloc, the 1.2 percent decrease in retail trade is due to a fall of 2.1 percent for the non-food sector, while food, drinks and tobacco remained stable and automotive fuel increased by 0.4 percent.
     
The highest increases in total retail trade were registered in Malta, Luxembourg, Hungary and Slovakia, and the largest decreases in Germany, which registers a monthly fall of 3.2 percent, Portugal and Poland.
