The Central Union of Agricultural Producers and Forest Owners-MTK has termed the removal of milk quotas as a clear threat which should be taken seriously.

"Rapid market liberalism will, however, not guarantee the livelihood of Finnish dairy farmers. Concrete measures are needed in order to avoid a permanent dairy crisis, and the concentration of milk production in areas with low production costs should be prevented," said a statement from the Milk Committee.

According to the Committee, milk production has to strive in the middle of a new milk crisis which is as a result of increase in demand and the fast growth of production.

MTK called on the European Union to act swiftly on removal of the market disruptions and preventive measures.

Food prices will this year remain lower than last year, according to the estimation of Pellervo Economic Research Institute (PTT).

The EU will announce the end of milk quotas on Wednesday.
