FTimes- STT Report, Jan 20

Subscribers of the mobile phone operator Sonera have suffered serious problems following a glitch in the phone network on Tuesday morning.

During the worst manifestation of the glitch starting from 5.00am, about half of all calls and 30 per cent of text messages failed to connect.

There were also minor disturbances to the data network.

The tele-communication, however, was restored at about 1.30pm, said Sonera sources.

Modifications to the core network are probably the reason for the interference with the mobile network, said Sonera in a statement. However, the exact reason and the causes are not known yet.

The Finnish Communications Regulatory Authority (Ficora) has termed Sonera mobile network service disruptions serious, because they affect the entire country.

Ficora is now awaiting the final report from the telecommunications operator on the disruptions.

Based on the report, the agency will determine whether Sonera’s operations need to be addressed.

In accordance with normal practice, Sonera has one week to submit a final report to Ficora.
