The Vaani Delicacy potato surprised the Finns interested in traditional crops this spring.

The Resources Centre (Luke) reported a previously unknown variety at the time, and now it has obtained additional data due to feedback.

The potato delivered to Luke by Heimo Outola is thought to be the only farmed variety in the world.

His family has maintained it for over a hundred years. Because of the news, a few other growers in Vaani have come out publicly.

The Vaani Delicacy ended up in a valuable place immediately. Some of the potatoes were planted in the spring in the Louhisaari manor castle benefit garden in Masku, Southwest Finland.

Now, the garden at the birthplace of Marshal Mannerheim is already sprouting green stems.

“The benefit garden imitating the model of the 1700s was established this summer. The Vaani Delicacy fits in here perfectly,” said researcher Maarit Heinonen from Luke.

Luke examines and preserves traditional Finnish crop varieties.

“They have been deposited in our food production gene bank, in case we need them one day,” Heinonen added.
