Defence Minister Jussi Niinistö has called for shortening the call-up period for reservists’ training so that it would be possible to call them up at a faster pace.
At the moment, the Conscription Act stipulates that summons for refresher training must be sent no later than three months before the first day of training.
Niinistö has started a legislative project with the aim of removing the time limits in order to improve the readiness of reservists with refresher training.
He hopes to issue a resolution to parliament as early as this spring.
“Given the current security situation and how situations can evolve rapidly, the time limits certainly seem too long,” Niinistö said during the opening ceremony of the national defence course in Helsinki.
