Sat, 22 Oct, 2016 12:07:42 AM FTimes – STT Report, Oct 22 ![]() Rami Adham. File Photo – Lehtikuva. The National bureau of investigation (NBI) has launched a preliminary investigation on the ac-tivities of a man of Syrian origin, Rami Adham, the so-called "toy smuggler".
The procedure is not an official pre-trial investigation, but rather the police will investigate whether there are grounds to suspect criminal activities.
Collection of funds offence and inciting against an ethnic group could be the possible offences to be examined, according to detective superintendent Tero Haapala.
"If the money intended for Syria did not go through, there might be a case of collection of money offence. The other part is different writings by Adham, that is, are there grounds to suspect in-citement against an ethnic group," said Haapala.
According to Haapala, the Finnish-Syrian community had a permit granted by the Helsinki police to collect funds, however, the permit did not apply to the whole country.
Adham had become known for being involved in relief operations in Syria. He dispatched toys to children of Aleppo, among other things.
Earlier, news agency STT reported that Adham has previously been convicted for assault and two doping offences.
Haapala said that NBI will decide at the start of next week whether to launch an official investi-gation.
The launch of the unofficial investigation was first reported by Finnish commercial broadcast MTV.
