Local residents in Porvoo suffered panic and fear on Tuesday afternoon, after a leak developed in the liquid gas pipeline of Neste kilpilahti Oil Refinery factory.

The leakage, however, was repaired at night without any casualty or major environmental damages, factory and rescue team sources said.

The incident took place at about 2:30pm, but the reason behind the leakage could not be known immediately.

However, Neste Oil Production Manager Jari Koskinen said the cause of the leakage would be investigated soon.

The authorities had initially asked the residents of surrounding Tolkkinen and Emäsalo areas to stay indoors after the accident, but the order was lifted later at 4pm.

Koskinen said there was risk for some damage but it was not to this extent.

The residues of hydrofluoric acid in the discharge might cause irritation to the eyes and respiratory tract in low concentrations, officials of the Neste Oil Company said.

The leakage was repaired at about 7pm, said Eastern Regional rescue services, adding that the accident did not cause any damages to the humans or the environment.
