Bio-forestry Company UPM has been fined €60,000 for breaching industrial safety standards during an accident that took place in Pietarsaari and injured one worker.

The foreman in charge of maintenance was also fined 30 days’ salary.

The accident occurred when the subcontractor hired by the forestry company was repairing the conveyor after it had broken down. The worker was trapped and injured in the accident when he was trying to replace the chain of the conveyor.

The Ostrobothnia district court maintained that assessing and planning safe methods of servicing was a requisite with regards to hazards encountered while operating conveyors.

The biggest task for the court was, however, to establish, if the injured worker was a subcontractor or just a worker hired on own terms.

The court ruled that he had been a subcontractor and that he had been at the enclaves controlled by the forestry company.
