The Supreme Administrative Court on Thursday cancelled the uranium mining licence of nickel mining company Talvivaara.

The court ruled that the issue be sent back for the government’s reconsideration because the company's operation had changed in various ways, particularly in terms of financial matters.

The company has already applied for corporate restructuring due to its financial woes. Talvivaara's interim report published in November also revealed new information on its financial situation.

The government granted Talvivaara licence to mine uranium in March 2012, which was supposed to be extended till 2054.

If necessary, further clarifications on the company's financial activities and the conditions regarding safety, as per the nuclear energy laws, should be examined.

Talivaara planned to extract uranium as a by-product from its nickel mine in Sotkamo.

The Finnish Association for Nature Conversation as well as a number of local residents has complained to the Supreme Administrative Court against the government decision to grant the company licence to mine uranium.
