The mild winter in Russia and Western Europe has significantly caused fur sales to drop, compared to last year, said the Finnish fur auction outlet Saga Furs on Sunday.

According to the outlet, Sunday's sales stood at EUR 34 million and the amount was much lower compared to the average auction sale of the previous year.

The total sale last year was EUR 143 million, said sources at the auction house.

The outlet, which auctioned the sales of mink and fox fur, predicted that the current financial year would be weaker than the last one, which experienced record high sales.

In a report, the company’s Managing Director Pertti Fallenius said the market situation would be clarified during the international auction period between February and March next year.

According to the outlet, final estimates could not be made based on Sunday's sales from the beginning of the season.

The company however estimated that the current fiscal year would see sales remaining lower compared to the previous 14 months.
