Minister for International Development Pekka Haavisto on Thursday said the reports about the national flag carrier Finnair being pertinent to a contract that tramples workers’ rights came as a surprise to him.

Speaking at parliament during the question-answer session, Haavisto, who is also responsible for the State Ownership Steering, deemed such a contract reprehensible.

Two Finnish language tabloids, Iltalehti and Ilta-Sanomat, on Tuesday reported that Finnair had signed a contract with a Chinese contractor in 2002 which prohibited Finnair’s subcontracted workers from engaging in homosexuality, getting pregnant and participating in strikes.

Finnair has promised to investigate other contracts as well.

Meanwhile, Transport Workers’ Union -AKT has condemned Finnair’s plan to outsource cabin crew services from the Norwegian crew management company OSM Aviation on some of its Asian routes.

“The association condemns in the strongest terms the plan by Finnair to replace Finnish cabin crew on certain Asian routes by cheap labour,” said ATK in a statement.

The union posed whether the practice was acceptable at a time when thousands of people have become unemployed and laid-off.

“We are waiting and demand the minister responsible for ownership steering, Pekka Haavisto, to intervene in the situation and stop the reflagging of Finnish workforce,” said ATK.
