Soili Suonoja, who sits in the board of four companies including state-owned Finavia which operates airports in the county, plans to step down according to state broadcasting company YLE.

YLE reported that Suonoja is intending to step down from board positions at state-owned alcohol retailer Alko as well as from Leijona Catering and Finnpilot.

According to YLE, Suonoja based her decision to step down because she did not want to damage the reputation of the companies she represents.

Suonoja is suspected of nepotism in which she is alleged to have organised jobs for relatives in Itella, Alko and Finavia. She has, however, denied the allegations in the YLE report.

She did comment on the subject of resignation to news agency STT.

The controversy was met with silence throughout the day. Minister of Health and Social Services, Susanna Huovinen also did not comment on the issue citing urgency as the reason.

Transport Minister Paula Risikko and her assistant did not return phone calls or text messages on Tuesday.

According to earlier reports, Risikko and the minister in charge of state steering ownership, Sirpa Paatero, have both demanded clarification from Suonoja.

Finavia has not yet responded to claims that Suonoja had organised for her daughter and her godson to get job at Finavia.

The chairperson of the board of Finavia, a state-owned company which maintains a network of airports and air navigation system, is reportedly faced with questions for recruiting her godson in the company.

Earlier, a Finnish language evening tabloid Iltalehti reported that Finavia Board Chairperson Soili Suonoja has provided her godson with a job in the company.

The newspaper in the past also made report on the recruitment of Suonoja’s daughter by Finavia.
