Engineering company Sandvik on Friday announced that it would close down its site in Turku.

The company in a press release said it will in turn optimise the site in the coastal town of Turku.

Production at the Turku site is estimated to end in the second quarter of 2016. However, Sandvik will continue manufacturing of all products at other sites in Finland, China and the US.

The reorganization that arises from the decision will affect all 460 employees at the site in Turku in some way.

On the other hand, approximately 120 persons have been excluded from the consultation process. The excluded hold jobs related to frame manufacturing, outsourcing or other mining and group functions that are not part of the Turku manufacturing operations.

A total of 340 of the existing 460 jobs at the Turku site will continue to be affected by the closure.

Whereas, approximately 140 people of the 340 affected persons will be offered transfer possibilities.

According to Sandvik, optimization will not result in personnel reductions at the Tampere site as previously indicated.
