Less than a fifth of the Finns would lower their salary to help the Finnish economy, finds a recent poll by the Helsingin Sanomat.

Most would prefer working more hours or reducing their vacation days. Thirty-eight per cent agreed to increased work hours, and 26 per cent of the employed respondents preferred cutting vacation days. Four out of ten did not agree to any of the above proposals.

Two out of three would instead see a 5 per cent additional tax on those who earn more than 100,000 euros a year.

Finnish Confederation of Salaried Employees Chief Economist Ralf Sund believes Finns are already showing a considerable readiness for sacrifice.

“Despite already having a sense of this, I’m honestly surprised by the numbers. There is an awareness of the crisis situation here,” Sund tells the newspaper.

A thousand people responded to the TNS Gallup survey last month. The margin of error is about three percentage points.
