Former minister of economic affairs Jan Vapaavuori has been appointed Vice-President and member of the Management Committee of the European Investment Bank (EIB), reported national broadcaster Yle on Tuesday.

Vapaavuori succeeds Austrian Wilhelm Molterer and takes office on Tuesday. His appointment is based on a proposal from the finance minister of Finland, said Yle.

Vapaavuori's responsibility in EIB is to supervise the bank's operations in Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, as well as many countries outside the European Union. He is also in charge of issues such as social responsibility of enterprises.

Born in 1965, Vapaavuori was Finnish minister of housing and minister of the Nordic cooperation from April 2007 to June 2011, and minister of economic affairs from November 2012 to May 2015.
