The Särkänniemi dolphinarium in Tampere has announced the initiation of co-determination talks which will also be evaluating the future of its operarations.

The negotiations will cover the entire nine employees of the dolphinarium.

The amusement park has been forced to resolve its future as it has been for a long time operating on a loss.

“The cost structure of the dolphinarium has been simply for a long time unsustainable and therefore, options have to be sought,” said the dolphinarium’s managing director Miikka Seppälä in a release.

Visitors to the amusement park have been satisfied, however, their numbers have been declining from year to year.

The number of visitors this summer also dropped, however, the total number of Särkänniemi visitors rose by 10 percent. Seppälä, however, refused to divulge by how much had the number of visitors declined.

“The reality is that in a decade's period, the attitudes towards the activities of dolphinarium have changed,” Seppälä said.

The future of the dolphinarium has been shrouded in uncertainty for long. The city council of Tampere rejected the initiative to shut down the dolphinarium.

According to those opposed to the dolphinarium, intelligent bottlenose dolphins cannot fare well in small pools. There are four dolphins at the dolphinarium.
