Prime Minister Juha Sipilä on Thursday said the wage model placed by the labour groups is satisfactory from the government’s perspective.

Labour market organisations on Thursday presented the government with a joint proposal of a new Finnish wage model.

The new wage model is considered as one of the deadlocks in the social contract negotiations.

Sipilä told the news agency STT that according to the labour groups’ proposal, the wage model has major role to play in the export industry.

The prime minister also said that the proposal offers good prerequisites for tax cuts; however, the effects of the proposal could only be assessed in the summer.

“This is a major and important structural change. It is important for the reluctant unions to be involved,” Sipilä said, adding, “For the part of PAM, I hope that this helps in the evaluation of the package and that they become involved.”

The impact of the wage model on the public finances is deemed to be difficult before it is put in practice.

Sipilä pointed out that the model corresponds to the models adopted by Finland’s main competitors.
