The leader of the main opposition Suomen Sosialidemokraattinen Puolue (Social Democratic Party of Finland-SDP), Antti Rinne on Saturday urged all the labour unions to join the discussions on the competitiveness agreement.

Talking to the national broadcaster Yle in its Ykkösaamu (morning breakfast programme), Rinne urged the Central Organisation of Finnish Trade Unions (SAK) and the Service Workers’ Union (PAM) to attend the negotiations.

He also advised the Confederation of Finnish Industries (EK) to allow employers’ associations to attend.

Meanwhile, Timo Soini, chair of the Perussuomalaiset (Finns Party), a component of the three-party alliance government on Saturday said he was pleased that the labour market organisations have reached an agreement on the Finnish wage model, where export sectors define wage levels.

He also hoped that the unions not participating in the negotiations would join as soon as possible.

“The government will do everything in its power to see that the social contract succeeds. I hope that all will be included, because the alternative is worse,” Soini, also the foreign minister, told reporters at the True Finns Party council.

He assured that the government will keep its promises, if the other parties, namely the labour market organisations, stick to their agreements.

The government will not, however, according to him, make binding promises to cut taxes or reduce budget cuts before next Thursday, when the board of the Service Workers’ Union (PAM) will meet to discuss the social contract.
