For the first time, groceries will be allowed to remain open on Midsummer.

Last year, the majority of shops closed at noon on Midsummer Eve and were closed completely on Midsummer Day.

According to a director of K-Supermarket retail chain, Ari Sääksmäki, the stores themselves made the decision regarding their opening hours, but most of the K-stores will remain open during this weekend.

“The demand for extending opening hours during Midsummer is natural in traditional lakeside cottage towns,” said Sääksmäki.

According to Sääksmäki, big cities have also demanded longer opening hours, as many spend their Midsummer in the city or doing shift work, for example.

S Group Retail Trade Commercial Director Ilkka Alarotu also said that, as a rule, their shops will be open during Midsummer.

“This year, we will learn how many customers visit stores during Midsummer in each area and at what time. Now, efforts have been made to estimate how many supermarkets in a particular area will be in demand,” said Alarotu.

Opening hours will vary from shop to shop.

According to S Group and Kesko, many shops, whose opening hour regulations were freed at the beginning of the year, have extended hours for Midsummer Eve, and many will also open their doors on Midsummer Day.

“There are a lot of variations in opening hours from shop to shop, but S Group will keep about 800 out of 1000 stores open on Midsummer Day,” said Alarotu.

S Group and Kesko shops will remain open on Midsummer Eve typically until 6.00pm. Some may remain open longer.

On Midsummer Eve, shops will open at the normal time, and on Saturday, between 9.00am and 12.00pm.

Lidl stores will remain open on Midsummer Eve until 4.00pm. On Midsummer Day, Lidl stores will remain closed with the exception of Helsinki’s Kamppi and Rauma stores.

Alko will remain open on Midsummer Eve from 9.00am to 1.00pm, but will remain closed on Midsummer.
