The chair of Vihreä liitto (Green League), Ville Niinistö on Tuesday criticised the budget proposal announced by the treasury bench last week saying it would increase income differences and poverty.

The parliamentary group of the party discussed the issue at its summer meeting in Kalajoki.

According to Niinistö, the largest group of beneficiaries of the tax reductions planned by the government are those with greater income.

“The standards of those relying on social support and pension are weakening,” Niinistö said in a statement.

The Green Party requested the parliament information services for a calculation of the effects that the budget proposal will have on the purchasing power of the citizens.

According to the party, those with greater income would get the largest benefit both in proportion and in euros, while those relying on social support will lose 2 per cent of their purchasing power.

The party said the income differences would grow. On the whole the changes in income tax and benefits would keep the purchasing power somewhat unchanged.
