Finland’s population stood at 5,458,038 at the end of May, posting an increase of 6,750 persons in five months, primarily thanks to migration gain from abroad.

According to Statistics Finland’s preliminary data, the increase of population in the period from January to May is 1,600 persons fewer than for the corresponding period of the year before.

The main reason for the population increase was migration gain from abroad: the number of immigrants was 5,150 higher than that of emigrants. The natural population growth, or excess of births to deaths, was 1,600 persons.

According to the preliminary statistics for the January-May period, 10,400 persons immigrated to Finland from abroad and 5,200 persons emigrated from Finland. The number of immigrants was 1,450 lower and the number of emigrants 250 higher than in the corresponding period of the previous year. In all, 2,700 of the immigrants and 3,400 of the emigrants were Finnish citizens.

During the period, 23,600 children were born, which is 500 children fewer than in the corresponding period of 2013. The number of deaths was 22,000, which is 600 lower than one year earlier.

According to the preliminary data, the number of inter-municipal migrations over the January to May period totalled 91,850. Compared with the previous January to May period, the decrease was 1,950 migrations, according to the municipal division of 2014.
