The Friends of the Earth Finland, a pro-environmental organisation, has claimed that the gold mine in Huittinen in Satakunta region is draining uranium in Loimijoki.

The Southwest Finland Centre for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment (ELY Centre) is currently investigating into the claim.

A group concerned with the environmental impact of the mine took samples from the mine’s nearby areas, said the Friends of the Earth Finland.

The results indicated an elevated radioactivity in the ditch sediment as well uranium concentration in water.

The ELY Centre has asked the mining company, Dragon Mining, for clarification within a week and intends to team up with the Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority in Finland (STUK) regarding the matter.

The ELY Centre will also examine whether uranium should be incorporated in the mine’s monitoring programme.

According to STUK’s assessment, conclusion cannot be drawn at this point based on one sample. Furthermore, the sediment’s uranium elevation is not abnormal.
