File Photo Lehtikuva. The chairman of the main opposition Suomen Sosialidemokraattinen Puolue (Social Democratic Party of Finland-SDP), Antti Rinne said the Brexit is a chance for Europe to look at itself in the mirror.
He believes the British decision to leave the EU is a sign that the social aspects of Europe and its union are not developed enough.
“These last few years, Europe has focused on the economy, forgetting the people,” Rinne told the news agency STT over telephone on Friday.
He believes that some of the reasons can be found in Britain’s domestic policy, such as unemployment and the failure of social and health services.
“Europe must wake up and wonder why a part of the British population blames the EU for Britain’s internal political problems,” he said.
Rinne believes if the EU is not quickly and boldly renewed, its future could be in jeopardy.
“The EU has been regarded as eternal, and it is built in such a way that the countries work together. This certainly threatens to undermine it,” said Rinne.
