Turku-based ship building company STX has lost the work orders for the construction of two passenger ferries for Danish operator Scandlines because of financial crisis.

The German-Danish ferry operator Scandlines has confirmed that it will acquire two passenger ferries from Stralsund shipyard in Germany.

In early January, Scandlines made new offers for its ship following STX’s failure and floated new tenders for all other European companies.

In another development, Jari Aalto, the chief steward of STX Turku shipyard, said the loss of the Scandlines order meant that about 500 employees would be laid off in late Autumn early January.
