The disruption created in the mail delivery service operated by Itella after the Easter holiday is affecting more than 10,000 households a day, said sources in the postal and logistic services operator.

The ongoing delay in mail delivery is set to continue next week, said Anu Punola, the service production director of Itella.

Punola said learning the new distribution routes introduced after Easter would take some time. Also, in as much as interference was expected in advance, there was an unusually high number of a sick leaves, explained Punola.

In addition, he said, mail delivery during the holiday and at the turn of the month had been busier than usual.

Accumulation of backlog, according to Punola, has been counteracted by having mail deliveries made the next day in case of failures at certain distribution points.

Itella decided in March to reduce its workforce by nearly 500 after a co-determination talk.

The co-determination talk was initiated on Itella assessment of decline in demand for mail delivery services, among other reasons.

The majority of the laid-off workers will be out of work in May.

The Postal and Logistic Union (PAU) has said that the situation of mail delivery will become clear when the workers leave. Those on fixed term contracts also have their contracts expiring at the same time.

Heidi Nieminen, a secretary of PAU expressed surprise at the current disruption of mail delivery since all employees are still at work.

PAU had earlier warned that personnel reduction would seriously jeopardise mail delivery.
