FTimes - Xinhua Report, Dec. 11

Finland is going to deploy a submarine cable system for data transfer from Germany, reported Finnish online news service Good News from Finland on Tuesday.

The project, named "Sea Lion," will be the first direct cable link between Finland and continental Europe.

At present all data transmission to Finland takes place via Denmark and Sweden. About two weeks ago, Finnish telecom operator Elisa reported widespread disruptions in Internet traffic caused by a fault in fiber optic cables connecting Finland and Sweden.

The new system, to be built by Finland's Cinia and France's Alcatel-Lucent, will span more than 1,100 km under the Baltic Sea.

With an ultimate capacity of 15 Terabits per second, the project is due to be completed by 2016.
