National railway operator VR Group is planning to transfer its head office from Helsinki Central Station to Pasila.

The VR also plans to sell part of the railway station premises to a third-party investor.

The plan, however, is in the study phase and nothing has yet been decided and still VR may maintain the ownership of the premises, VR sources said.

Currently, the head office is located at the main railway station situated in the east wing of the Railway Square.

The new headquarters would probably be built in North Pasila, Pasila or near Imala station.

The project, if undertaken, would be carried out in conjunction with a real estate investor and VR meanwhile would be a tenant.

Mikael Aro, the CEO of VR Group justified the plan based on the need to improve the property portfolio's return.

Upon its completion in 1909, the Helsinki railway station main office at the time was the largest and most modern office in Helsinki, said Aro.

He, however, explained that the current premises are no longer suitable if one looks at what a modern company's head office in a competitive situation looks like.
Over 600 employees work at the main office.
