The recent denial-of-service attacks on Finnish banks are hardly going to be the last, according to an evaluation by the Federation of Finnish Financial Services-FFI.

Mika Linna, a leading specialist, predicts that more attacks lie ahead, since the tools used are more effective and readily available today.

The extent of the attack and cost incurred will become clear in the coming weeks, after the follow-up investigation.

“Most likely, this has been a huge attack directed towards Finland,” said Linna, adding that there have been similar attacks in the world. However, Linna said he was not aware of such kinds of attack having taken place in the country before.

The denial-of-service-attack on OP began on New Year’s Eve and continued for the fifth day on Sunday.

The attacks on the bank seemed to have been over on Sunday morning, but the disruption began to manifest again in the afternoon.

Similarly, some Nordea customers have reported interferences in the bank’s online services.

Linna emphasised keeping up defences against such attacks and recommended that both consumers and companies should take care of the security of their products by ensuring the use of programmes and protection which are up to date.
