Recent storm which caused havoc at the end of the week caused considerable damage to trees in southern Finland.

According to estimates from the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, the damage could rise from half a million euros to up to five million euros.

The damage caused by the storm to trees is estimated to span from thousands to tens of thousands cubic metres of timber.

The Ministry said strong winds hit the coastal area and slightly Central parts of the country.

The storm brought down mostly individual trees or small groups of trees. Extensive damage to trees, however, did not occur.

Previous storms Eino and Oscar to hit the country in the past year brought down trees totalling approximately four million cubic meters.

Forest owners can choose to leave fallen deciduous trees and small number of coniferous trees in the forest since they increase biodiversity.
