Housing companies are starting to experience slight growth in problems related to payment of maintenance charges, found news agency STT after contacting a number of housing management companies.

The prolonged economic situation in the country is starting to be seen in the arrears column.

According to the estimates provided by Realia Isännöinti Oy, a nationwide company which provides housing maintenance service, the number of reminders on unpaid arrears which have been sent have increased by 10-15 percent when compared to a few years back.

"Unemployment has increased and the household economies are relatively tight," said Jyrki Makkonen, the director of maintenance services at Realia Isännöinti Oy.

A slight growth in payment problems has also been witnessed by Jari Nieminen, the maintenance manager of Isännöintiverkko Oy which operates in the metropolitan area.

"There has been, however, no dramatic change which has taken place," said Nieminen.

On the other hand, Mauri Kivilaakso, the executive director of Turku based housing maintenance company Akseli Kiinteistöpalvelut Oy has not observed any kind of alarming trend in the amount of  arrears in maintenance charges.

According to Kivilaakso, it is important for the arrears to be paid in full. Kivilaakso also admitted the slight growth in payment problems.

Kivilaakso pointed out that the 1990s recession was a different case when payments were left unpaid all at once.

Kari Kallio, the executive director of Jyväskylän Kiinteistöpalvelu Oy revealed that payment reminders and repayment plans have become more frequent than in the past.

"You could say that payment problems have become frequent but currently, nothing like shocking amounts. However, rarely, problems can advance until that stage when the housing company is taken over due to the arrears,” said Kari Kallio.

Jyrki Pyykönen, the Northern Finland regional director of nationwide housing maintenance company, Ovenia Isännöinti Oy echoed similar sentiments.

"A slight increase in payment difficulties has been witnessed. Especially last year when arrears rose due to housing companies' rising cost," said Pyykönen.
