An exceptional low number of municipalities will raise municipal tax next year.

Only 45 municipalities have decided to raise their taxes next year, while last year nearly 100 municipalities hiked their taxes.

The highest municipal tax of 22.50 per cent will be levied in Savonlinna next year, whereas Kauniainen will have the lowest municipal tax at 16.50 per cent.

The difference between the highest and the lowest municipal tax will remain unchanged at six percentage points.

Municipal tax hikes will occur mostly in smaller municipalities next year.

In municipalities with inhabitants over 50,000, the municipal tax will be hiked in Vaasa (0.50%) and Kouvola (0.25%).

The highest municipal tax increment of 2.0 per cent will be levied in Pelkosenniemi.

On the other hand, the tax rate will fall in Kitee, Luoto and Luhanka.

Furthermore, the tax rate will fall in some municipalities where municipal mergers took place.

Due to municipal mergers, the number of municipalities next year will be 313.

The average municipal tax rate will be 19.87 per cent which translates to an increase of 0.04 percentage points from this year.

The tax rate increase will raise municipal tax revenues next year by around 40 million euros.

Despite the increase in municipal taxes, the municipalities’ tax income is forecast to decline as increased corporate income ratio is scrapped.
