The international C++ Standard Committee called WG21 will for the first time convene in Oulu on June 20-25 this year, reported the technology magazine Tivi.

Ville Voutilainen, the chair of the committee’s Evolution Working Group will bring about 100 participants to the convention in Finland.

WG21 which has been in operation since 1989 oversees the quality of C++ language.

The committee during the meeting will discuss changes to standard tasks such as standardised support for file system and internet networks.

The June meeting’s agenda includes a few major issues concerning the 2017 version of the programming language. Minor proposals will also be discussed during the convention. Therefore, it is expected that it will be a busy week.

“It will be quite busy with work. There will be no time for sightseeing,” said Voutilainen.

Voutilainen has been involved in the committee’s operations since 2009.Voutilainen who had been coding C++ for 20 years was appointed the Evolution Working Group chair at the end of 2014.

“I will first comment on a couple of proposals. I was a rank-and-file member and afterwards I served as the committee’s secretary,” Voutilainen said, adding that “There is a principle that if one does a good job then one may do more.”

C++ has significance on industrial development of the internet. Voutilainen said applications for small mobile devices could be written with the aid of the language in addition to massive server-level systems without undermining efficiency.

“Reduction in electricity consumption has huge significance in big data centres as well as in small portable devices,” Voutilainen explained the benefits of the programming language. The Oulu event participants include technical managers and experts from international companies like Google, Intel, and IBM. The meeting is sponsored by Symbio.
