Minister of Justice and Labour Jari Lindström believes the competitiveness agreement sets a framework for the unemployed.

“It is absolutely clear, after all the arguing about it, that we need to respect and abide by it,” Lindström told the news agency STT.

A ministerial group formed by Minister of Finance Petteri Orpo and Minister of Economic Affairs Olli Rehn on Thursday deliberated on new employment measures to be decided in the government’s next budget session at the end of this month.

The officials have been preparing possible solutions for new employment measures.

“When the work instruction is to make a gross list, it will perhaps include some easy ones but also some harder propositions, without disclosing too much details. It is our task as politicians to see what is worth pursuing,” Lindström said.

According to the minister, the goal is to have good co-operation between the labour market parties.

Lindström refused to discuss further about what kind of employment measures are included in the package.

He pointed out that many of the already initiated measures have yet to show their effects and that some are still in the pipeline. New measures are also needed.

“Hopefully nobody is expecting the moon from the sky, because this is such a huge challenge,” said Lindström.
