Uber driver operations will be examined in the near future both in the judicial and political arenas. The drivers are guinea pigs for the unlicensed taxi business.

Several dozens of people are waiting for clarification whether they will be charged with unauthorised taxi driving.

Uber Finland manager Joel Järvinen said that every driver works independently and claims personal responsibility.

Järvinen claims there are several hundred drivers in the Helsinki metropolitan area.

The company supports, according to him, drivers in distress, but he did not clarify what kind of assistance Uber offers its drivers.

“We are available and respond to all questions. Each driver operates independently and decides for him or herself when and how much they want to be involved in the service,” Järvinen said.

Currently, professional taxi operations in Finland require a taxi licence. Two persons were sentenced in the spring for unauthorised taxi driving.

They were punished with day-fines and lost the money they made as Uber drivers. Both drivers have appealed to the District Court, which is expected to issue a judgment in the mid-September.

At the same time, the Helsinki police are currently investigating 60 cases in which a driver is suspected of operating as an unauthorised taxi driver.

Detective Chief Inspector Pekka Seppälä believes that the total criminal benefit of the 60 cases is approximately 500,000 euros.

“It's an average of 8,000 euros per suit,” Seppälä said.
