Ticks are still present in berry and mushroom woods even though autumn has arrived.

Ticks thrive in moist and warm conditions between 5-25 degrees Celsius.

However, night frosts and withering vegetation will begin to hinder the ticks. Ticks, however, still thrive in September.

"Medical follow up cases show that diagnosis arrive until October," said Olli Vapalahti from the University of Helsinki.

The temperature at the beginning of early autumn has been higher than normal which should be a case of concern for berry and mushroom forests.

According to Vapalahti, ticks thrive for instance, in blueberry forests.

Vapalahti advised that berry pickers to be vigilant of the ticks and if skin symptoms begin manifest one should seek medical attention.

The main reason for the spread of ticks is warm temperature which benefit the parasites.

The spread of the parasites is aided by animals such as deer and birds.

"The climate create conditions for the thriving (of ticks), but of course the ticks move to new areas with the animals," Vapalahti said.

However, Finnish Wildlife Agency senior planning officer Mikael Wikström emphasises that for ticks it does not matter which animals it sticks to.

Wikström debunks the idea that ticks are spread especially by deer.
