Total consumption declines by 14 percent in 2012
FTimes Report, February 4

The use of hard coal in various sectors, particularly in power generation has been reduced significantly in the country last year, according to preliminary data of the Statistics Finland.

The report released here last week said that the total consumption of hard coal decreased by 14 percent in January to December last year compared to the stipulated period of the previous year.

The total consumption of coal as fuel in power generation and producing heat amounted to around 3.6 million tonnes, corresponding to about 86 petajoule in energy content.

In January to December last year, the consumption of hard coal was 37 percent lower than the average for the corresponding period of the 2000s.

At the end of December 2012, the total stocks of hard coal stood at about four million tonnes, or 14 percent less than the previous year. Separate production of condensate power decreased by 42 percent in 2012.

Although the use of coal was reduced during the first six months of the last year, its consumption increased in the second half due to electricity consumption in manufacturing, cold in the last part of the year, smaller water reserves in the Nordic countries and low prices of emission rights and in part, availability of peat.
