FTimes-STT Report, March 1

Finland has announced it space strategy on Thursday for the year 2013-2020 with the view to bring significant development to the important field, although the country has no planning for the mission of sending human being to the space at this moment.

The General Manager of Tekes, Kimmo kanto on the occasion of the announcement argued for the necessity to give importance to the space research in the coming days.

Kimmo said that as a member country of the European Union, Finland is conducting its space research jointly  under the EU space agency and developing the area where it demands to improve.

He pointed out that it was not possible to bring perfect development without having the space technology as the present world was running based on communication.

The GM said that space technology has a great impact to face the everyday’s challenge to warfare.

He informed that about 30 Finnish companies and 20 research institutes are continuously providing their efforts to EU space agency. The emergent of the transport, communication and logistics are playing important role based on space research.

Replying to a query regarding the Finland’s position to identifying the extra terrestrial objects like meteor, Kimmo said that Finland is working with international community and EU space agency to develop the method to identify the object which approaches to the earth.

In the future, the main application areas for Finnish space activities will be Arctic solutions and the usage of open-source data material. This is the conclusion of the Finnish space strategy 2013-20, which was published in Helsinki on 28 February 2013, said a government press release on Friday.

The four main fields of Finnish space activity are the scientific exploration of space and Earth, Earth observation satellites, satellite positioning and the space industry. The core of our space activity is formed by the European Space Agency's (ESA) programmes, in which some 30 Finnish companies and 20 research institutes are presently participating. Finnish space activities are focusing on:

1) Supporting activities in the Arctic region by means of space technology. The Sodankylä-based satellite data centre fortifies research on the Arctic, its natural resources, climate change and environmental safety, while also creating services in the public and private sector.

2) Open positioning data enhances the competitive edge of the services. The new Earth observation satellites produce a wealth of information never before available. Combined with the four global positioning satellite networks (GPS, GLONASS, Beidou/Compass, Galileo), it facilitates countless positioning applications.

3) The level of scientific research is enhanced through participation in ESA and EU programmes. The international integration of Finnish space research andEarth observation know-how will be further intensified, particularly through ESA and EU programmes.

4)  Our space industry's answers to increasing international competition are specialisation and applications. The competitiveness of Finnish space technology enterprises on the international satellite market is being further improved.

A small group of Finnish enterprises designs and manufactures satellite components, structures and software. The number of these companies corresponds to the space industries in other European countries of comparable size. The combined turnover of these enterprises was approximately EUR 13 million in 2011. The estimated annual turnover of domestic enterprises applying space technologies is EUR 240 million.
