Two new ministers have joined their offices on Friday after President Sauli Niinistö approved their appointments made by the Social Democratic Party (Suomen Sosialidemokraattinen Puolue-SDP), a component of the 6-party ruling alliance.

Susanna Huovinen was appointed the minister of health and social services and Pia Viitanen the minister of housing and communications, a government press release said.

Krista Kiuru also took charge of the ministry of education and science leaving her earlier portfolio of the ministry of housing and communications.

President Niinistö on the same occasion also released the outgoing education minister, Jukka Gustafsson, and the outgoing health and social service minister, Maria Guzenina-Richardson, from their duties as the SDP dropped them from the cabinet under a reshuffle move.

Earlier in the morning, the government in a plenary session decided the distribution of responsibilities among the ministers, members of cabinet committees, and ministers’ deputies.

SDP Chairperson and Finance Minister Jutta Urpilainen on May 17 announced inclusion of Susanna Huovinen and Pia Viitanen in the cabinet and exclusion of Jukka Gustafsson and Maria Guzenina-Richardson from it.

The cabinet reshuffle also includes transfer of Krista Kiuru from the communications ministry to the ministry of education.
