The tram accident that took place in Helsinki last Wednesday was caused by driver's negligence, according to Helsinki City Transport (HKL), the company that runs public transport in Helsinki.

According to HKL, the driver had left a bag inside the carriage, which activated a safety device that works to prevent the tram from moving without the driver.

The driver also left the tram's ignition key on the drive position. The third error happened when the driver inadvertently alighted from the tram without shifting the drive control knob.

When the doors closed, the tram started to move by itself without the driver. It moved for about two hundred metres before it derailed and stopped at the traffic barrier poles.

There were no passengers at the time of the accident and no person was injured. The police are continuing with the investigations.
