The revised convention on social security between the Nordic countries would enter into force on May 01, 2014, said a press release of the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health.

The convention that simplifies work between officials in these countries will replace the previous Nordic Convention on Social Assistance and Social Service.

The purpose of the Nordic convention on social security is to facilitate mobility between Finland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Iceland and to ensure that people travelling between the countries have the right to social security benefits, according to the release issued on Thursday.

The agreement supplements the social security regulation between EU and ETA countries that all the Nordic countries comply to.

Certain provisions in the current convention on social security will remain unchanged also in the new agreement.

“For example, the right of return within a 5 year period without losing benefits will remain as
it is,” said the release.

The Nordic ministers of social affairs and health signed the agreement in 2012 in Bergen, Norway. Finland's parliament approved the agreement in spring 2013, and it will enter into force once it is ratified by all participating countries.
