Housing Minister Pia Viitanen will take over the Ministry of Culture and Sport in addition to her present responsibilities.

Viitanen will almost entirely manage the culture and sports portfolio as well as youth affairs.

Suomen Sosialidemokraattinen Puolue (Social Democratic Party) decided to share the responsibilities on Thursday after consultation with its parliamentary group.

Krista Kiuru will take over Viitanen’s communications portfolio while Susanna Huovinen will oversee gender equality responsibilities.

Jutta Urpilainen, finance minister and leader of SDP, said the choice was justified because Viitanen had in the past served as the chairperson of the parliamentary Sub-committee for Education and Science and led the Workers' Educational Association.

Urpilainen also said Viitanen had vast experience in culture, sports and youth affairs.

On Kiuru taking over communication, Urpilainen said she had previously served as the Minister of Communication.

The Ministry of Transport and the Ministry of Sports and Culture were vacated last week with the resignation of Vasemmistoliitto (Left Alliance) from the alliance government over a dispute regarding austerity package.

Earlier, Local Government Minister Henna Virkkunen was given the ministry of transport in addition to her present responsibilities.
