FTimes – STT Report, Aug 27

A few people have left Finland to join the fight against the extremist organisation ISIS, according to information gathered by Bellingcat, a website for citizen journalists which investigates current events.

The open-source investigation lists volunteers from the United States who have departed to fight ISIS.

The investigative report by Bellingcat also lists individual countries from which volunteers have left to fight ISIS, and Finland is among the countries named on the list.

Senior Inspector Tuomas Portaankorva from the Finnish Security Police-Supo confirmed the report that some people have left the country to fight the extremist organisation.

Just under 70 people are reported to have departed for the conflict regions of Syria and Iraq.

They have joined the ranks of ISIS or other anti-government organisations or have left for other reasons.

During the past year, those who have left mainly opted to join ISIS or other violent groups. Furthermore, some individuals are fighting against ISIS.

“Information comes to the security police all the time that more individuals have left. Travelling to the conflict zone is still continuing,” Portaankorva said.

Supo, however, did not divulge whether those who left for the conflict region are Finnish citizens.

Travelling to fight along the ranks of ISIS or against ISIS has been monitored throughout the course of the conflict.
