The population of grouse has declined in all parts of the country compared to last year, according to the Natural Resources Institute Finland.

The population of grouse has decreased in the last two to three years. The population of black grouse, hazel grouse and willow grouse are lower than the average for the last 10 years.

According to assessment of a researcher at the Institute, chilly and rainy summer has most likely caused deaths of chicks this year.

The population of the birds is at 60 percent of the 2011-2013 peak years. According to the researcher, the population variation is typical in the long run.

The population has declined strongly in southern Finland than in the northern part of the country.
