The matter is shortly to be presented for discussion in the government. The current permanent secretary to the ministry, Arto Räty told the news agency STT on Tuesday that his five-year fixed term in the position will not be extended. “I am very disappointed. I was motivated and willing to continue,” said Räty. Räty was informed about the matter at the beginning of the week, which came as a surprise to him. “This is very surprising. I would not have believed.” According to a report run by the national broadcaster Yle, the reason behind the decision is personal differences between Niinistö and Räty. According to Yle, Finance Minister Alexander Stubb and Interior Minister Petteri Orpo have attempted to appeal on behalf of Räty. Stubb through his assistant confirmed to STT that he was involved in the discussion at the party level. Räty has been working as the permanent secretary to the ministry since 2011. He was hoping to continue following an application made in the end of spring. Four other candidates applied for the post.
